Have you ever tried to make sense of how to interpret a handful of symptoms in a given case? They all look like random symptoms, but they are connected together and connected to different remedies. They form part of the different layers that weave through. To illustrate the process, we will use Hyoscyamus as a remedy in homeopathy.
If you understand this process in a case, this can be applied to any methodology you use. Working with several remedies at the same time requires more skills than working with a single remedy. You need to be able to break down symptoms in the same fashion below and put them into different categories or layers. I need to be able to effectively assign different symptoms to different layers to track them through the case.
The success of my methodology lies not only in my system but also in the knowledge and understanding you have about homeopathy. This does not mean – how much you know about remedies, protocols or principles of homeopathy, because this is only a small part of homeopathy. Instead, it is about making connections between these entities. Having all of that knowledge is pointless without being able to make the connections or understand what the patient or the energy is trying to tell you.
You can use my system for home prescribing or tackling individual aspects of the case; the methodology is beneficial for anyone who wants to learn homeopathy with confidence and get results. It is practical and simple to follow, but at the same time, it holds a lot of depth for those with more experience. But when I use my own system in my practice, I elevate the process to a higher level.
When I talk about the analogy of a hologram as a homeopathic model, I mean it comprehensively; my understanding of what is happening in the case by the different symptoms the patient is giving me, whether pathology or mental-emotional symptoms and the relationship of the remedies prescribed in the case. I approach the protocols or remedies I prescribe by considering them in parallel with the narrative of the case. This approach elevates my understanding of the case in homeopathic terms into a multi-dimensional perspective. I examine the hologram from diverse angles to gain a comprehensive view.
The multi-methodology approach helps me to tackle the different parts of that hologram according to how they are presented. Whether I opt for Banerji Protocols, singular layers, Narayani Combinations, Miasmatic layers, or any other method is irrelevant. What matters most is the ability to approach the case through diverse entry points. The remedies within these methodologies offer insights into areas where the case- or patient shows imbalances.
Working with the Banerji Protocols has allowed me to understand the cases from a completely different perspective. However, this is only possible because I can connect the case and the remedies prescribed in relation to the patient or the situation- past, present or miasmatic. The Banerji Protocols have allowed me to upgrade my knowledge in a three-dimensional way, merging different aspects of the case together; they are still the best tool in my practice and what yields the best results.
At this point, you may be curious about my approach to understanding a case in that way and what is so different about my way of working.
I am just going to show you! To see the thought process behind understanding symptoms in a remedy three-dimensionally, I will unfold the process of understanding symptoms in a remedy from a three-dimensional perspective.
I apply the same thought process below when analyzing protocols or remedies in a case.
PHYSIOLOGICAL ACTION AND TOXICITY
Hyoscyamus is a highly poisonous plant.
The plant contains various tropane alkaloids such as hyoscyamine, atropine, tropane, and scopolamine (hyoscine). Alkaloids are naturally occurring substances that plants produce as a defence mechanism against herbivores.
The two main components of Hyoscyamus are the alkaloids Hyoscyamine and Hyoscine, which are used as medicines under controlled conditions. They are used as mild analgesic, antispasmodic, and sedative
You will know the use of plant and their alkaloids, in particular, Hyoscinine in the form of Hyoscine butylbromide, or the Brand name of Buscopan, used to treat cramping and abdominal pain, pain in the stomach and IBS.
- Abdomen, pain, hypogastrium sore
- abdomen, pain, cutting pain
- Abdomen, distension, tympanic
- Abdomen inflammation
- Abdomen, flatus passing after amel
- Stomach, Inflammation
- Stomach, complaints of the stomach
Hyoscyamus in homeopathy is one of the remedies I recommend for abdominal colic in IBS.
It is related to Belladonna and Stramonium in their constituents and physiological action. This means that they share some similarities and also that, homeopathically, they are related.
The physical appearance of Hyoscyamus is very similar to Belladonna; although the dilation of the system, it is not so pronounced as in Belladonna.
The field of action of the plant and the alkaloids is nervous affections and spasmodic pain.
It is also particularly useful in the treatment of mental health disorders and dementia.
- Mind: confusion of the mind
- Mind: delirium
- Mind: muttering
- Mind: delusions, changing suddenly
- Mind: dementia
- Mind: speech confused
- Mind: insanity
- Mind: mania
- Mind: Memory loss of memory
- Mind: schizophrenia
- Mind: talking with absent persons
- Mind: confounding objects and ideas
Hyoscyamine and scopolamine are commonly used as anticholinergic drugs. They affect the central and peripheral nervous systems. A dysfunction of the muscarinic cholinergic system has been drawn in various diseases like depression, epilepsy, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
The Banerjies use Hyoscyamus as the third line in their protocol for Depression.
BANERJI PROTOCOL TIP-3RD LINE DEPRESSION
- Hyoscyamus 6c twice daily
- Conium 3c twice daily
( Please note that I do not recommend self-treating depression in a chronic state.)
The main affinities of the Hyoscyamus in homeopathy are blood, mind, brain, nerves and particularly the muscles of the face and eyes. This observation provides insight into the pathology that the remedy affects, with a particular focus on the neurological system and the mind.
Hyoscyamus in homeopathy is an important remedy for neurological complaints.
Muscular twitchings are common in Hyoscyamus states, and there is a tendency to bump into things with wild, open eyes. Hands show incessant movements.
- General: jerking of the muscles
- Generals: restlessness
- Generals: twitching
- Face: twitching
- Extremities: motion involuntary
- Mind: concentration difficult, attention, can not fix
- Mind: concentration difficult studying
- Mind: impatient
- Mind: behaviour problems
BANERJI PROTOCOL TIP ADHD
- Hyoscyamus 6c twice daily
- Calcarea Phos 3x twice daily
BANERJI PROTOCOL TIP TICS
- Hyoscyamus 6c twice daily
This is also a good remedy for Taurette’s, specially for ticks around the face and vocal ticks.
- Mind: speech difficult, from articulate sounds
- Mind: speech difficult from spasms
- Mind: Taurette’s Syndrome
For this, two potencies can be useful Hyoscyamus 6c or Hyoscyamus 200 both twice daily
Hyoscyamus is a remedy that the Banerjies also use in homeopathy for dyslexia.
- Mind: dyslexia
- Mind: neurological complaints
- Mind: mistakes making- indifferenciating objects
- Mind: mistakes making in reading
BANERJI PROTOCOL DYSLEXIA
- Hyoscyamus 6c twice daily
Speech is irrational and incoherent and may show a tendency towards lewdness: obscene language, sexually orientated, indecent, dirty.
This is a remedy often used for confusional states such as dementia and delusional states with a tendency to body exposure. This is a remedy with a general tendency to play with the genitalia in children or adults.
Certain neurological degenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s, may exhibit forms of disinhibition, including sexually inappropriate behaviours.
Hyoscyamus is one of the most important remedies in homeopathy in this area and my preferred dosing strategy is 200c twice daily.
- Mind: throws all covering and clothing
- Mind: nacked wants to be
- Mind: dirty plays with
- Mind: mania, sexual mania
- Male genitalia, handling genitals
- Male, masturbation, disposition to
This is a particularly useful remedy for confusional states where either the individual is displaying sexually oriented behaviours or they have a tendency to fecal digging and smearing– Scatolia.
- Mind: feces, swallows his own faces
- Mind: feces passed on the floor
- Mind: dirty urinating and defecating everywhere
For this, Hyoscyamus 200 twice daily can be very helpful taken for a couple of months to help reduce the behaviour.
SIGNATURE AND REMEDY
We are looking at the similitude between of the original botanical source of Hyoscyamus against homeopathy and the remedy symptoms.
- Plant grown in waste grounds and commons/ sensation of being an outsider
- Repulsive appearance/ involuntary stool and urine and playing with it
- Leaves emit a strong narcotic smell/ entire loss of consciousness
- At lower temperatures, the plant needs fewer hours of sunlight to flower; also the biennial plant needs a cold winter to flower/ tremendous chilliness
- Flower colour is dirty yellow/ lewd talk
TENSION OF OPPOSITES IN HOMEOPATHY AND HYOSCYAMUS
This is also called polarities, and you will find this in all remedies. It is the expression of the same energy in the same axis but in opposite directions.
In the Materia medica of Hyoscyamus, you will find both of these states:
- Loquacity/can be silent for hours
- Active mania/ unconsciousness can barely be mentally stimulated
- Suspicion/strong desire to be close to somebody
How can these two contrasting states be in the same remedy? How can we understand the connection of the symptoms in the Materia Medica?
Let’s check out a brief summary of the most well-known symptoms of Hyoscyamus in homeopathy.
From William BOERICKE, M.D. Pocket Manual of Materia Medica. Hyoscyamus Homeopathy.
“Disturbs the nervous system profoundly. It is as if some diabolical force took possession of the brain and prevented its functions. It causes a perfect picture of mania of a quarrelsome and obscene character. Inclined to be unseemly and immodest in acts, gestures and expressions. Very talkative, and persists in stripping herself, or uncovering genitals. Is jealous, afraid of being poisoned, etc. Its symptoms also point to weakness and nervous agitation; hence typhoid and other infections with coma vigil. Tremulous weakness and twitching of tendons. Subsultus tendinum. Muscular twitchings, spasmodic affections, generally with delirium. Non-inflammatory cerebral activity. Toxic gastritis.
Mind.–Very suspicious. Talkative, obscene, lascivious mania, uncovers body; jealous, foolish. Great hilarity; inclined to laugh at everything. Delirium, with attempt to run away. Low, muttering speech; constant carphologia, deep stupor.”
Although at first hand, all of these symptoms look disconnected, as in each of the clinical cases I see in practice, symptoms have a meaning, and they join together within that understanding.
Let’s explore that and start to look at the symptoms and its meaning. We are going to interpret the relationship of those symptoms.
This is how often your patients present the case with a mixture of physical pathology and a sprinkle of mental and emotional symptoms.
An interesting point in this tension of opposites is -suspicion- and -the fear of being alone. This is very interesting because if you are suspicious, you think that somebody else has done something wrong (suspicious: causing one to suspect guilt or wrongdoing). Suspicious=not trusting. So, the person in this state does not trust someone because that person has done something wrong to them.
This is confirmed in the rubrics by:
- Delusions: that she is being watched
- Delusions: that he was pursued by enemies
- Delusions: he is about to be poisoned
- Mind: company, desire for
- Mind: suspicious
- Fear: of being alone
- Mind: delusions of being injured by his surroundings
- Mind: eat, refuse to
So what can be done so wrong that the person is so angry? What does the person fear most? And why is there fear of being alone, and why is he suspicious ? If we look at the fears in the Materia Medica we see these as single symptoms:
- Fear, of being betrayed
- Fear of being sold.
- Mind: fear of people
To betray means to be a traitor, to break a promise or, to be disloyal to, or to disappoint the expectations of. Interestingly, a synonym for betray is to sell, disappoint and let down.
- Mind: fancies he has suffered wrong
- Mind: ailments from grief
- Mind: ailments from emotions
So, the letdown feeling would relate to the fear of being alone and the suspicion of betrayal. Of course, they are all interrelated, and it is difficult to say when one begins and the other ends.
To progress in our search of why the person feels that way, we now understand that the person is suspicious because someone they regard quite dearly has disappointed them and let them down.
If you are sold, you move from one place to another, from one group to another. The person feeling like this wants to belong there and be included. This also ties in with the fear of being alone.
Also, if you fear being sold, you think someone does not want you.
- Delusions: deserted, forsaken
If you are not wanted, it is because someone or something is better than you. This arouses a feeling of jealousy.
- Mind: jealousy
- Mind: delusions of being in wrong places
- Mind: delusions as if would be sold
Hyoscyamus in one of the remedies used in jealousy, sibling jealousy or romantic relationships and it is often found in ailments from emotions, fright, jealousy and unhappy love.
- Mind: love ailment from disappointed
- Delusions: all men are swine
- Mind: anguish in children
- Mind: forsaken feeling
- Mind: jealous, revenge wants to take
- Mind: jealousy, children, newborn gets all the attention
For jealousy states in children or adults, Hyoscyamus 200 twice daily or every 3rd day, depending on the intensity of the symptoms, can be very helpful.
The remedy is also indicated in confusional states such as Dementia and Alzheimers dysplaying paranoia or suspicion of other people.
- Mind: suspicious, people are talking about her
- Mind: spying on everything
There is the need to be included, and there is an internal feeling the person does not want you. This provokes rage, and with rage comes violence.
- Mind: wildness
- Mind: striking, desires to
- Mind: spits in the faces of people
- Mind: fights want to
- Mind: rage, fury
- Dreams: animals, wild
- Mind: inciting others
- Mind: destructiveness
This is one of the reasons that this remedy is often indicated for confusional states with aggression, often found in Alzheimer’s. The symptom of aggression in this disease aligns with the use of Hyoscyamus in homeopathy due to its corresponding pathology.
For this, Hyoscyamus 200 twice daily is my preferred dosing strategy.
Also, this situation of feeling not wanted creates a state in which the person tries behaviours to be noticed. Mania, crazy or silly behaviour is displayed: loquacity, disposition to make jests of everything, foolish, silly, laughs, sings, quarrels, shameless.
Wanting to be noticed also denotes an aspect of jealousy. If you feel jealous, you think someone is being treated better than you. Someone else is getting more attention than you. Attractive behaviours ensure that the other person will notice you.
- Mind: singing
- Delirium: comical
- Mind: insanity, madness, erotic
- Mind: lewdness, lewd talk
- Mind: laughing
- Mind: silly
- Mind: shameless, exposes the person
- Mind: gestures, makes, involuntary motions of the hand
- Mind: loquacious
Hyoscyamus is frequently prescribed as a remedy for children who engage in excessive self-stimulation of their genitals for pleasure. Hyoscyamus 200 twice weekly can be helpful to decrease the behaviour.
Excessive masturbation in children can often begin as a way to cope with negative emotions and seek comfort.
- Masturbation, disposition to in children
However, this state of mania, when taken to extremes, will end up in a state of stupor; the nervous system is so aroused that it needs to take a break. At his point, we see the following: unconsciously, can barely be aroused, stupor.
This is one of the end stages of the remedy picture and the typical picture of the end stages of dementia.
- Mind: slowness
- Mind: indifference, apathy
- Mind: weakness of memory
- Mind: stupefaction
- Mind: dullness, sluggishness
This remedy holds a Botanical and Homeopathic relationship to Stramonium and Belladonna and often follow each other well.
